A painting I made about my family. My brother Jonathan died in the year 2010. He was my best friend. I still miss him.
This painting is about Resurrection morning. At the Second Coming of Christ, He will resurrect all the saved dead. They will rise from their graves with immortal bodies. The Bible teaches that death is an unconscious sleep, which will be reversed for the saved, when Jesus returns. It does NOT teach that "people go to Heaven when they die." That is a false and pagan teaching. Not from Scripture. The Bible teaches the Resurrection. That is what it teaches. Not spirit life after death, which comes from all forms of paganism, and from the first lie Satan told in Eden: "You shall not surely die!" The truth is dead people are dead. If people are seeing "spirits" that look like their family, the truth is those spirits are DEMONS impersonating dead loved ones. So they can spoon-feed you lies. Using your broken emotions of affection for your family, to feed you lies.
Jesus Himself taught that death is like unconscious sleep. He literally called death a sleep. How could the saved be "in Heaven" if the entire Bible calls death a sleep? This false teaching of an "immortal soul" has permeated Christianity like a plague. Infecting every religion and Christianity also. There is not a single human who is immortal. They are all condemned to die because of sin. Sin doesn't bring eternal life. It literally brings death and decay. Immortality is a GIFT from Jesus Christ, and it is NOT given to His people UNTIL THE RESURRECTION. Then, and only then, immorality will be given to those who are saved:
" Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep [die], but we shall all be changed— in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”
“O Death, where is your sting?
O Grave, where is your victory?”" - 1 Corinthians 15:51-55
This verse shows that immortality is ONLY GIVEN to the saved AT THE RESURRECTION when Jesus returns. NOT at the moment of death. So yes, the dead really are DEAD. Or "asleep" in Jesus, if they die saved.
Not everyone who follows God will die, though. There will be a select few–the 144,000–who will survive to the return of Jesus, and never taste death. They will be given immortality, without dying or resurrecting. This group who remains alive, will be reunited with their family and friends who are resurrected:
"But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep [died], lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means go before those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words." - 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
